Customer Comments and Our Story

Our elegant Dowager Empress is radiant in luxurious green silk. Dowager Empress Cixi lived from 1835-1908, and was the de facto ruler of Qing Dynasty for nearly a half century. Charismatic and autocratic, historians are still debating whether Cixi was a villain or simply a victim of her times and circumstances. The expert craftsmanship of our silk artists is evident in this gorgeous portrait, using only 1/16 of a single strand of silk thread with tight parallel stitches to create definition. Random stitches were used to build color and texture, with more than 10 layers of individual stitches. Our silk artwork is an example of a popular movement in Chinese contemporary art. Certain modern Chinese artists study and employ Western artistic styles and techniques such as realism and impressionism, but paint traditional Chinese subjects and themes. This exquisite portrait is a fantastic meld of the ancient techniques employed by our silk artists and our ability to adapt those techniques to modern themes.
